The Opportunity
Field Training Officers do more than teach clinical skills, they shape future professionals. Effective leadership requires understanding not only how to perform the job, but how to communicate, build trust, navigate conflict, and adapt to the unique needs of each individual. Without these skills, misunderstandings can hinder learning, coaching becomes less effective, and team performance suffers.
This workshop was designed to help Field Training Officers become more intentional leaders by building self-awareness, understanding others, and developing practical strategies to communicate, coach, and lead more effectively.
Note: This workshop was designed by me using the DISC personality assessment framework as the foundation for participant learning and discussion.
My Role
Identified an opportunity to strengthen leadership and coaching development among Field Training Officers.
Designed and facilitated an interactive leadership development workshop using the DISC behavioral framework.
Created curriculum, learning activities, participant resources, and facilitator materials.
Led experiential learning through self-assessments, role-playing, coaching simulations, and team exercises.
Evaluated participant feedback to support continuous improvement.
Learning Objectives
By the end of the workshop, participants were able to:
Increase self-awareness by identifing their DISC style and reflecting on personal strengths, communication preferences, and areas for growth.
Recognize behavioral differences and communicaton styles through observation and discussion.
Strengthen communication by adapting their approach to different personalities and situations.
Apply practical strategies to resolve conflict and build trust.
Adapt coaching techniques to meet the needs of individual learners.
Lead with greater confidence by understanding both their strengths and growth opportunities.
Approach
The workshop was intentionally designed around experiential learning, encouraging participants to move beyond understanding leadership concepts to actively practicing them. Through self-assessment, discussion, coaching simulations, role-playing, and team challenges, participants practiced leadership behaviors they could immediately apply in mentoring, coaching, and developing others.

Leadership Impact
By the end of the workshop, participants gained practical tools to improve communication, build stronger relationships, resolve conflict, and adapt their coaching approach to meet the needs of individual learners. Through increased self-awareness and a better understanding of others, they developed greater confidence in their ability to lead, mentor, and support their teams.
More importantly, the workshop reinforced that effective leadership is not one-size-fits-all. By helping participants recognize individual differences and adapt their leadership style accordingly, the program strengthened coaching relationships and contributed to a more collaborative, supportive, and effective learning environment.
Participant Reflections
"I will carry what I learned that day with me throughout my leadership journey!"
" I now understand that as the leader, you don't have to have all the answers. Part of being a leader is listening to others and evaluating input from others in order to figure out what the team needs to achieve its goal."
"Thank you so much for everything this was very beneficial "
"Speaking in a tone so that others feel as though they can and want to approach you is vital to success."

What I Learned
Designing and delivering this course reinforced that leadership development is most effective when learning is active, reflective, and immediately applicable. Creating opportunities for participants to better understand themselves, adapt to others, and practice real-world coaching conversations reinforced that meaningful growth happens through experience, not just instruction. It strengthened my ability to design learning experiences that build confidence, improve communication, and help people become more effective leaders. Whether analyzing data or developing leaders, I believe the best solutions begin with understanding people, identifying underlying needs, and designing practical strategies that lead to better outcomes.
